Do You Need Protective Eyewear for Pickleball?
An accessory most players never think about — until they need it.
Doubles pickleball puts four players in a small space, with a hard ball moving fast at close range — eye protection is worth genuinely considering, not just an afterthought.
Why It’s Worth Considering
Kitchen-line rallies happen at close range between all four players, and a mishit or deflected ball can travel toward a face faster than reaction time allows. It’s not a common injury, but it’s a real one — and protective eyewear largely eliminates the risk.

Who Should Prioritize This
Players who wear glasses already have a head start.
Regular prescription or sunglasses already offer some protection — dedicated sports eyewear with polycarbonate lenses and a secure fit is the more deliberate option for players without any eyewear.
Is It Required?
No — eyewear isn’t a rule requirement at any level of play. It’s entirely a personal risk-tolerance decision, similar to wearing a mouthguard in other sports where it’s optional but genuinely protective.
