Pickleball for Kids: Getting Your Family Started

A parent’s guide to introducing pickleball safely, affordably, and in a way kids actually want to keep playing.

Pickleball’s small court and light paddles make it one of the easiest racquet sports for kids to pick up — here is how to start them off right.

1
Start with a lighter, junior-sized paddle
Adult paddles are often too heavy for young wrists. Look for lightweight junior paddles (usually under 7oz) so kids can control their swing without straining.
2
Use indoor foam or low-bounce balls first
Standard outdoor balls can sting on off-center hits. Softer foam balls or slower indoor balls let kids rally longer and build confidence before switching to regulation balls.
3
Shrink the court for younger players
For kids under 10, mark out a smaller kitchen-to-kitchen zone rather than using the full court — it keeps rallies going and avoids long chases after missed shots.
4
Look for family or junior sessions at local clubs
Several clubs listed on our Clubs directory run casual weekend sessions that welcome kids and beginners — a low-pressure way to try the sport before buying gear.
5
Keep first sessions short and playful
20-30 minutes is plenty for a first session. Focus on rallying and fun over scoring or technique — kids who enjoy the first few games are far more likely to ask to go back.

Once your child is comfortable rallying, our Beginner learning hub has simple drills that work well for younger players too.
