14mm vs 16mm Paddles: Which Should You Buy
Core thickness is one of the biggest performance decisions in paddle buying — here’s what it actually changes.
Core thickness is one of the biggest performance decisions in paddle buying — here’s what it actually changes.
Most modern paddles come in either a 14mm or 16mm core, and increasingly a thinner 12.7mm option — the difference is felt in every shot you hit.
| Core Thickness | Feel | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 12.7mm | Firmer, more reactive, faster response | Players who want a livelier, more powerful pop |
| 14mm | A middle ground — some pop, more manageable than thinner cores | Players who want to stay aggressive without losing all control |
| 16mm | Softer, more dwell time, more forgiving | Players prioritizing control, touch, and consistency |
Thicker cores generally favor control and forgiveness, while thinner cores favor a firmer, more powerful response — but paddle construction (face material, core density, shape) can shift this significantly, so thickness alone isn’t the full picture.
16mm is the safer default for most recreational and beginner-to-intermediate players — it’s more forgiving of mishits and easier to develop consistency with.
