Best Paddles for Small Hands and Smaller Grips

A grip that’s too big affects your game more than most players realize — here’s how to get it right.

A grip that’s slightly too large forces your hand to work harder to stabilize the paddle on contact, which shows up as reduced touch and slower reaction time at the net.

What to Look For

1
Look for a 4-inch or smaller grip circumference
Most standard paddles run 4-4.5in; players with smaller hands are usually better served by the smaller end of that range or a paddle specifically offering a 4in grip.
2
Consider a shorter handle length
A shorter handle (around 4.5-5in) can make the paddle feel more proportionate in a smaller hand, especially for one-handed backhand players.
3
Use an overgrip to fine-tune, not fix
A thin overgrip adds roughly 1/16in to circumference — useful for small adjustments, but don’t rely on it to compensate for a grip that’s meaningfully too large.
4
Prioritize a lighter overall weight
Smaller hands generally have less leverage — a lighter paddle (under 7.8oz) reduces fatigue and improves maneuverability at the kitchen.
