Overgrips 101: Why You Need One and How to Apply It

The cheapest, most overlooked upgrade for your paddle.

An overgrip costs a few ringgit and takes five minutes to apply — but a worn-out or sweaty grip is one of the most common reasons players lose control of the paddle mid-rally.

Why Bother With an Overgrip

Factory grips wear thin and lose tackiness over weeks of play, especially in humid outdoor conditions. An overgrip wraps over the factory grip to restore tackiness and cushioning cheaply, without replacing the whole handle.

How to Apply One

1
Start at the base of the handle
Peel back a small section of the adhesive backing and anchor it at the butt end of the grip, angled slightly.
2
Wrap upward with slight overlap
Wind the tape upward toward the paddle face, overlapping each pass by roughly a quarter of the tape’s width — keep tension consistent.
3
Finish and secure the end
Cut the tape cleanly at the top and secure it with the small finishing tape usually included in the pack.
HOW OFTEN TO REPLACE

Most players replace an overgrip every few weeks of regular play, sooner if you play outdoors often or sweat heavily — it’s cheap enough to swap proactively rather than waiting until it feels slick.
