Paddle Core Materials Explained: Foam vs Honeycomb

The material inside your paddle shapes how it feels more than almost any other spec.

Nearly every modern paddle core falls into one of two categories: honeycomb (built from hexagonal cells) or full/molded foam. Each produces a genuinely different feel and sound.

Polymer honeycombThe most common core today — a lightweight hexagonal cell structure that flexes slightly on impact, producing a softer, quieter feel with strong touch and control.
Nomex honeycombAn older, stiffer, resin-coated fiberglass honeycomb — produces a louder, harder-hitting, more powerful response, but less forgiving and more prone to denting than polymer.
Aluminum honeycombA stiff metal honeycomb core, less common today — generally offers a firm, lively response similar in spirit to Nomex.
Full foam (EPP/PE foam)A solid molded foam core rather than a hollow honeycomb structure — typically produces a firmer, more powerful, more consistent response across the whole face, with a distinct muted sound compared to honeycomb paddles.

Which Should You Choose

Polymer honeycomb remains the most balanced, beginner-friendly choice. Full foam and Nomex/aluminum cores suit players who already have consistent contact and want more power, at some cost to forgiveness on off-center hits.
