Paddle Weight Guide: Light vs Mid vs Heavy
A few grams make a bigger difference than you’d expect — here’s how paddle weight actually plays out on court.

Paddle weight affects reaction speed, power, and fatigue differently — there’s no universally “best” weight, only what fits your body and playstyle.
| Weight Class | Range | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Under 7.3oz | Fastest hand speed and maneuverability at the net, but less built-in power on drives |
| Mid | 7.3-8.4oz | The most common range — balances reaction speed with enough mass for power |
| Heavy | Over 8.4oz | More natural power and stability, but slower reaction time and higher fatigue risk, especially on the arm and shoulder |
Heavier paddles are frequently cited by physical therapists as a contributing factor in overuse injuries like tennis elbow — if you’re prone to elbow or wrist discomfort, a lighter paddle is usually the safer starting point. See our guide on common pickleball injuries.
If you’re unsure, a mid-weight paddle (around 7.5-8oz) is the safest default — you can always move lighter or heavier once you know what you’re missing.
